Mental Health Matters

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Here are some tips on how to support your child with their mental health and warning signs to look out for.

How Kids/Teens Can Improve Mental Health

  • Spend time in nature
  • Find a movement-based activity (hiking, yoga, stretching, etc)
  • Do something your child enjoys together
  • Try something new
  • Limit screen time
  • Make sure your basic needs are met – Have you eaten enough food? Water? Enough sleep?
  • Journaling

How Parents/Caregivers Can Help

  • Listen to your child (the small and big things)
  • Have boundaries around screen time
  • Give specific and meaningful praise – Instead of saying, “I like your drawing,” try “I like the shade of blue you used for the sky.”
  • Ask specific questions about their day – Instead of “how was your day?” ask “what was your favorite part of your day?” or “what made you laugh today?”
  • Don’t be afraid to find professional help/support – Don’t know where or how to start? Reach out to the school counselor!

Warning Signs to Look For

  • Isolation from friends and family
  • Sudden disinterest in activities that used to make them happy
  • Change in weight or appetite
  • Stomachaches or headaches
  • Overall lethargic
  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Trouble understanding or concentrating
  • Excessive anger
  • Statements like “I feel worthless” or “I can’t deal with this/life anymore”
